Spring is here! What better way to celebrate its arrival than to get your hands dirty outside at a community garden? Iowa City, Coralville and Cedar Rapids all offer city-run options.

Cedar Rapids

Ellis Park — 916 Ellis Blvd NW (no running water)
Squaw Creek — Hwy 13 and Golf Course Rd SE
Tuma Park — 3239 C Ave Extension, Marion

Plots are available from March through mid-October, for personal garden use only. The cost is $35 for a 20-by-50 foot plot. Go to Northwest Recreation Center (1340 11th St NW) or call (319) 286-5731 weekdays from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. to reserve a plot.

Coralville

A refundable deposit equal to the rental fee is also required. Bring payment and a completed application to the Coralville Recreation Center (1506 8th St) No herbicides, pesticides or synthetic fertilizers allowed, and no perennials allowed. Iowa City

Chadek Green Park — 1920 Friendship St
Kiwanis Park — 1519 Teg Dr
Reno St Park — 516 Reno St
Wetherby Park — 2400 Taylor Dr

Due to popular demand, Iowa City is introducing two new locations this year: Kiwanis Park and Reno Street Park. If you had a plot in an Iowa City garden last year, today (Monday, March 20) is the last day to reserve the same plot, so return those forms soon! Open registration is first come-first served, Monday April 3 at 7:30 a.m. at the Robert A. Lee Rec Center. Get there early to get a spot — the building will open at 6 a.m.

Reno St., Kiwanis and Chadek have 10-by-20 foot plots, at $15.75 for residents and $20.75 for nonresidents. Wetherby has 10-by-50 foot plots for $25.75 for residents and $30.75 for nonresidents, or 10 feet by 23 feet for $15.75 for residents and $20.75 for nonresidents.
