Have you ever wondered what 16 burly Scottish Highlanders can do when they put their minds to it? If you’re ever in Scotland, you can stop by the Glenmorangie (the ‘morangie’ rhymes with ‘orangey’) Distillery and find out. The distillery traces its roots all the way back to 1738 when production began at the Morangie Farm in Scotland’s Vale of Tranquility. Today, Glenmorangie is handcrafted by the famous Sixteen Men of Tain (why 16 dudes? I haven’t the faintest idea, and Mr. Google has been somewhat unclear on that as well).
Glenmorangie Original is distilled in tall copper stills and aged in American white oak casks (in fact they’re former Kentucky bourbon casks made from Missouri oak). The result is a soft, smooth and very drinkable whiskey.
If you find single malt scotch intimidating or if you’re looking to try something different than the same bottle of Bourbon you always get, this is the perfect way to get your feet wet in the big wide world of Scotch — and it tastes amazing to boot. Bottles are available at most local liquor stores for $42.99.
Color: A nice shade of pale, straw-colored yellow.
Aroma: A pleasant floral aroma is noticeable, as well as a citrus undertone that brings to mind orange blossoms. There’s also a little vanilla and, in a pleasant twist, a touch of peaches as well.
Taste: Glenmorangie Original is light bodied and full of citrus, and there’s a touch of bitterness about it that reminds me of orange peel or that delicious ‘proper, Dundee Orange Marmalade.’ There are also floral notes that combine with vanilla and a burst of spice, bringing a flood of warmth that continues well after the last sip.
The Mixmaster: This single malt scotch, so don’t even think about mixing it — not even if you’re a highly trained bartender that’s interested in pricey ‘craft cocktails.’ Just don’t. Enjoy this the way it was meant to be enjoyed: Straight up and in a glass.
Overall: This is the kind of whiskey you fall in love with, and it will make you seriously consider never drinking any other type of Scotch ever again. It’s soft, smooth and goes down great with the perfect combination of vanilla, citrus and floral notes to make it a real pleasure to drink.
