Fastball w/ American Youth, Martin Carpenter & the Souvenirs, The Olympics
Blue Moose Tap House — Friday, Aug. 15 at 9 p.m. ($13-$15)
Get ready to party like it’s 1998 this Friday as alt-rockers Fastball hit up the Blue Moose Tap House for one of the most nostalgia-ridden shows in recent memory. The Minneapolis-based American Youth, along with Iowa City’s The Olympics and Martin Carpenter and the Souvenirs, will also be playing.
Fastball, based out of Austin, Texas, owes their initial success to the ’90s alt-rock craze (which led to their sophomore, platinum album, All the Pain Money Can Buy and the number one hit “The Way”), but it’s the group’s ear for hooks and expansive sound that has sustained them for more than 20 years. Though their most commercially successful records have leaned heavily on a darker, grunge sound, their most recent albums have been far more playful, with classical flourishes and alt-country touches popping up from time to time. All in all, they’ve only gotten better since leaving their major label for the indies — you may even find yourself digging their new songs more than their older hits!
American Youth, from Minneapolis, is also a must-see act. This four-piece is ramping up to the release of their debut album at the end of September, and they’re at the top of their game as a result. With an eclectic take on indie-folk, American Youth should strike a chord with those already grooving to the likes of My Morning Jacket or Andrew Bird.
The show begins at 9 p.m. with a ticket price of $15.
