Middle of Nowhere festival brings electronic music home to Iowa City

The inaugural Middle of Nowhere festival will be held in downtown Iowa City on Sept. 1-2 at various venues. Acts include SassyBlack, headlining Friday night at The Mill; Iowa City’s Brendan Lee Spengler, live-scoring animated films on Saturday evening at RADinc.; and Daedelus, closing things down Saturday night at the Blue Moose. Festival passes are $35; tickets for individual shows are also available, ranging in price from $8-15.

Review: MONO constructs a sonic canvass at Gabe’s

MONO returned to Iowa City after just over a year touring on 2016’s Requiem for Hell. The crowd was oddly thin, but appropriate: it was perhaps the quietest that I had heard Gabe’s during a show. The band was illuminated with a quiet red light, and throughout their set the band seemed to play around its steadfast glow. The light was warm, and evoked a sense of patience that let each band member’s instrument enter into, and exit from, each song. The distinct contribution of each performer could be acknowledged and recognized. Both the band and the audience were equally engaged at the occurrence of sound as it sprang forth from the stage: All present were enraptured at its production, in its occurrence.

Interview: Daily Show co-writer Lizz Winstead’s Vagical Mystery Tour heads to The Mill

The Lady Parts Justice League is bringing its Vagical Mystery Tour to Iowa City on June 20 at The Mill at 8 p.m. The performance will feature Lizz Winstead, musician Tina Schlieske of Tina and the B-Sides and comedians Alex English, Dina Nina Martinez and Joyelle Johnson. The 19+ show is co-presented by Little Village. General admission tickets are $15.

The Shook Twins head to The Mill

Hailing from Sandpoint, Idaho and currently operating out of Portland, Oregon, the Shook Twins — identical twin sisters Katelyn and Laurie Shook, backed by Niko Slice, Barra Brown and Josh Simon — will be performing at the Mill on 23 May, starting at 8 p.m. Featuring intricate folk harmonies accompanied by a variety of American music styles (ranging from folk to funk), the Shook Twins have been widely praised for their live performances.
