Comedian Aparna Nancherla mines for laughs in everything from depression to fruit puns

Stand-up comedian, actress and Witching Hour performer Aparna Nancherla has been named one of the “50 Funniest People Right Now” by Rolling Stone. In the last year, she has opened for Tig Notaro, appeared on the Netflix series Master of None, released her debut album and filmed a Comedy Central special. She will perform at the Witching Hour festival in Iowa City on Oct. 21.

‘We’re not easily satisfied’ — Mike Wilbur returns with Moon Hooch to Iowa City

Moon Hooch brought its incredible energy to Iowa City last year, promoting its new album Red Sky and showing how two saxophones and a drum kit can transform jazz into a transcendent, danceable, joyous experience. The trio — James Muschler, Mike Wilbur, Wenzl McGowen — returns to Iowa City on Oct. 3 for a show at the Blue Moose. Tickets are $12 in advance, $15 at the door.

The All Senses Festival fills the Quad Cities with art, film, poetry, music and more this weekend

The All Senses Festival is a new, four-day event in the Quad Cities that runs from Sept. 28 until Oct. 1, with many of the events offered at no cost. Notable among those are Ford Photography’s presentation of Wild Combination: A Portrait of Arthur Russell at the Figge Art Museum on Sept. 28 and the Lowland Block Party on Oct. 1.

Wild Belle’s Elliot Bergman pushes back against the world: ‘What about love? What about beauty?’

Chicago’s Wild Belle is fronted by Elliot and Natalie Bergman, siblings whose first album, Isles, was released in 2013. Since playing Gabe’s in 2016, the group has released a second album, Dreamland, and has continued to tour while working on a third. Wild Belle returns to Gabe’s on Sept. 23 at 9 p.m., with Fred Thomas opening. Tickets are $15-17.
