Arts Issue 2021: Deborah Elizabeth Whaley

For the 2021 Arts Issue, Little Village asked local artists to “build a utopia” through a one- or two-page comic.

Deborah Elizabeth Whaley is an artist, curator, writer, poet and Professor of American and African American Studies at the University of Iowa. Her recent book, ‘Black Women in Sequence: Re-inking Comics, Graphic Novels, and Anime’ (2015), explores graphic novel production and comic book fandom, looking in particular at African, African-American and multiethnic women as deployed in various representations of comic characters.
