Tonight at 6 p.m., school board candidates for the Iowa City Community School District will gather at the Iowa City Public Library’s Meeting Room A to express their views on preselected subjects concerning special education in local schools. One of the primary organizers of the forum, Dina Bishara, said that each candidate was given three questions to address during the forum, and afterward, attendees are welcome to have informal conversations with the candidates.
According to Bishara, the ultimate goal of the special education forum is not only to discuss ways of improving special education curriculum, but also to educate faculty, parents and candidates who may not have first-hand experience with dealing with these issues.
โWe want the community to understand that all parents worry about their kids, but when you have a child with a disability, you have to worry a little more about things like โwill they get a job? Will they go to college? Will they ever have a friend?โโ said Bishara, whose son is involved with a special education program. โWe just want to make sure that when the board and district makes changes, theyโre thinking about โokay, what are the consequence [for] families and children in special education?โโ
