Sip beer and enjoy a ragtag troupe of feminist performers this Saturday, Feb. 21 at 8:30 p.m. at The Mill, as the Canaries stage their very first show — a mix of music and comedy — to benefit the Planned Parenthood Voters of Iowa PAC.

The Canaries are a recently formed group of feminists who showcase and share their unique perspective through performance.

โ€œWeโ€™re a group made of experienced and professional artists with years (and maybe centuries) of community organization under our belts,โ€ said KT Hawbaker-Krohn, the marketing director and a spoken-word performer in the event. โ€œWe’re all pissed off with backwards, anti-woman politics, so it seems natural to come together and use our crafts to serve a common purpose.โ€

The event will be hosted by local comedian and playwright Megan Gogerty, and will feature dance, music and comedy that isn’t afraid to get political.

โ€œThey are a group of delightful and filthy feminists who are passionate about stand-up comedy and love ripping institutions to shreds,โ€ said Hawbaker-Krohn. โ€œThere will be cheerleaders, burlesque, poetry, music and storytelling — all from the feminist’s perspective. We wanted to create a space for women performers to incorporate their politics and art.โ€

It is fitting that the proceeds from the Canaries’ first event will benefit Planned Parenthood, because the troupeโ€™s name draws from a quote by Hillary Clinton about womenโ€™s rights: โ€œWomenโ€™s rights are like the canary in the coal mine. If you donโ€™t protect rights here at home and around the world, everybodyโ€™s rights are lost.โ€

The recommended donation for Saturdayโ€™s event is $10, and doors at The Mill open at 8 p.m.
