Dylan Jakobsen, an up-and-coming Seattle-based country singer, will be playing a solo acoustic show this Thursday at the Blue Moose. Eastern Iowa’s TJ Wilt and Danny Whitson will provide two more doses of solo acoustic country tunes, while The Sapwoods and Soul Phlegm will round out the night with their lively, full-band rock n’ roll.

It’s appropriate that the show is open to all ages — Jakobsen himself can’t even legally drink. Just 20 years old, his particular brand of country is far from any hard-drinkin’, “shot a man in Reno” kind, but rather, focuses on raw honesty and more than a few pop inflections. In the title track to his debut album, Statelines, Jakobsen name checks a handful of classic rock artists influential to him: The Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, and Tom Petty, to name a few. Tom Petty, however, might be the perfect reference point for Jakobsen’s music, with it’s good-nature Americana leanings.

Iowa City’s The Sapwoods have been earning some fitting comparisons to Petty as well, especially on their latest record, Peaks and Valleys. The five-piece just released their sophomore record, Peaks and Valleys, in June, and have been working hard to share their specifically Midwestern approach to rock n’ roll to bigger and bigger crowds. Thursday’s show marks their first performance in the Blue Moose’s big room, and they’ve definitely proven they’re ready to bring on a great show.
