I feel a bit like a Mission Creek failure today because I only managed to complete two thirds of Thursday’s plan. After the Little Village/Slow Collision Press reading at Trumpet Blossom last night, I found myself faced with three very tempting options: 1.) S. Cary at the Mill, 2.) Dessa at Gabes, or 3.) falling asleep while eating a bowl of macaroni and cheese in the comfort of my own bed. I chose option three. While I have regrets about many of my life decisions, surprisingly, eating mass amounts of carbs and cheese by myself while tons of awesome music is happening just blocks away isn’t one of them.
When I originally developed my week-long Mission Creek plan, I predicted tonight as being my low-key night, but after carbo-loading I am ready to finish these next three days strong.
5 p.m.
The Lit Crawl will take over downtown Iowa City today. This year’s Lit Crawl features over 60 authors representing more than 16 publishers from around the country. Mission Creek’s website has the full schedule, but my plan is to start at NoDo for Hobart and A Strange Object and then head to my favorite store in Iowa City, Revival, at 6p.m. for POETRY MAKE & Canarium.
6:30 p.m.
Then I’m headed to FilmScene to see Who the *$&% is Jackson Pollock? I haven’t had a chance to check out any of their cool screenings yet this week, so I am particularly excited to grab a beer, chill out, and take in a humorous documentary about a former long haul trucker who purchases a Jackson Pollock for five bones at a thrift store.
8 p.m.
The documentary ends just in time to catch Iowa City’s always awesome AWTHNTKTS before Cities Aviv (a rapper-but-not-always-a-rapper from Memphis) at Gabe’s. Check out his albums Digital Lows (2011) and Come to Life (2014) if you’re unfamiliar. They are both streamable on his Bandcamp page. Also, THIS IS FREE!
9 p.m.
I’ll then make my way to The Mill for The Lonelyhearts, Nat Baldwin and Kishi Bashi. This show is already sold out, so hopefully you purchased tickets in advance. But if you didn’t and need an alternative plan, I would recommend Haunter, Ben Seretan, Mind Over Matter and Tim Wehrle for a night of experimental, dreamy/droning electronic music at Trumpet Blossom.
