Dodge Street Coffeehouse, an Iowa City favorite that closed its doors earlier this year, will reopen. Just not on Dodge Street.

“Next month we’ll be opening at South District Market!” the coffeehouse’s owner announced in a Facebook post on Saturday. “We’re excited to join the lovely folks there and get to know the neighborhood. It’s quite literally on the opposite side of town from our previous space, so we understand if we’re not on your route anymore! But we hope you stop by once in a while. We’re thrilled to form new relationships while reuniting with old regulars.”

Dodge Street Coffeehouse debuted in December 2018 at its original location in the building that also housed the BP gas station at 2790 N Dodge St. Owners Kelly Elliott and Jamie Skinner opened the business because they wanted to see a family-friendly cafe in the area.

In early May, Elliot and Skinner announced the cafe would have to close because their landlord had sold the building to Casey’s General Stores, which planned to convert the building into one of its convenience stores.

“We are heartbroken,” Elliot and Skinner said on Facebook at the time. “When we opened our doors more than 5 years ago, our goal was to be ‘everyone’s coffee shop’, providing a quality product with excellent service while highlighting other local small businesses. We believe we have achieved that goal but more importantly, we have created a community where all people feel valued.”

There will be some changes when Dodge Street Coffeehouse reopens in October, including the menu. But there will still be “baked goods, a few healthy lunch items, and Molly’s Cupcakes.” (The last item is no surprise, since Skinner owns Molly’s Cupcakes.)

The new location also means Dodge Street will no longer have a drive-thru, but Elliot and Skinner said they will have an “order-ahead system and deliver to you curbside. Maybe on roller skates if the weather permits.”

One thing that won’t change is the coffeehouse’s name.

“Will we still be called Dodge Street Coffeehouse? Yeah why not?!”
