President Barack Obama has formally endorsed former nurse and Lt. Governor Patty Judge (D) in her campaign against incumbent U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley (R). Grassley, chairman of the Judiciary Committee, has held his seat in Washington since 1981.

In a news release issued Wednesday by the Judge campaign, Obama said, “I’m excited to support Patty Judge in her race for United States Senate. I know she will provide the kind of leadership, focus and hard work that the people of Iowa expect. Patty has never backed down from a challenge. I have no doubt that she will carry this spirit with her to the United States Senate. Working families may never have a better advocate than Patty Judge in the U.S. Senate.”

Polls show that the race between Grassley and Judge are closer than expected, with Grassley leading by an average of seven points. Perhaps Grassley’s unwillingness to give a formal hearing to the president’s Supreme Court nominee Merrick Garland has not only ignited the ire of the Commander in Chief, but also his constituents in Iowa.
