USA v. Japan FIFA finals

Downtown Iowa City — Sunday, July 5 at 6 p.m.

While this writer would have preferred to see the USA play England in the Women’s World Cup finals, it cannot be denied: Watching Abby Wambach et al. avenge the USA’s 2012 loss to the Land of the Rising Sun will be sweet as, say, leftover 4th of July apple pie.

Regardless! These are the salad days of summer, the rare weeks that come every couple of years when America’s national consciousness not only acknowledges but celebrates women’s sports. This Sunday, longtime and bandwagon fans alike will gather around the blue glow of cable-connected TVs everywhere to cheer on Solo, Rapinoe, Leroux and their talented teammates.

Here, for your viewing and celebratory needs, are five great places to watch the game in Iowa City.

1. Donnelly’s

(Obviously.) Join American Outlaws and truly, wonderfully rabid soccer fans at Iowa City’s go-to “football” spot.

2. George’s Buffet

Just think: If Japan scores, you soothe yourself by gazing at the scrolling Hamm’s Beer signs behind the bar.

3. Joe’s Place

Stress eating Joe’s Place’s free and buttery popcorn is a time-honored tradition on game day.

4. DC’s

The official unofficial sports bar of Iowa City: Not just for Hawkeye games. Also: Good stein deals!

5. Sports Column

Look, it’s in their name. These folks are all about the game. Which game? Every game.

Say it with me now: USA! USA! USA!
