While not exactly a one-album-wonder (there were a couple of other releases), Jeff Magnum’s record In the Aeroplane Over the Sea is what comes to mind for most people when they think of Neutral Milk Hotel. If you don’t think you’ve heard of the band, go find a few tracks online and see if you recognize the strained, hyper-caffeinated crooning and humming; I’ve little doubt you’ve heard Aeroplane‘s title track at some wedding or funeral, or just about any coffee shop in the world.
Few albums leave such a mark, and the drunken catharsis of singing along to Every. Single. Word of In the Aeroplane Over the Sea, even if it isn’t Jeff Magnum himself conducting, is too attractive, far more than many people will be able to pass up, no matter how cool they might be the rest of the week.
The proposition is simple: It’s a guy that plays Neutral Milk Hotel songs…with a ukulele. If you aren’t sure how you feel about this, or especially if you haven’t had your Neutral Milk Hotel moment yet, you should probably lower the curtains and spend a day and a half inside. By Friday night, you’ll find yourself a part of a whole new family, one that gets drunk and sings together, “soft and sweet.”
oh yeah, and the uke guy, he’s good
