Mazahir Salih, the newest member of the Iowa City Council, will step onto the national political stage on Saturday when she speaks at the Democratic National Committee Winter Meeting in Washington D.C.
Salih told Little Village the DNC reached out to her about speaking at the meeting two weeks ago.
“I wasn’t expecting they would call me,” she said. “I was shocked and surprised and excited.”
Salih will be speaking on the final day of the three-day conference, but she doesn’t know yet what topics the DNC wants her to address. She said organizers are supposed to contact her on Thursday to discuss her speech.
Salih said that the short notice regarding the subject of the speech doesn’t worry her.
“I have time,” Salih said. “I’ll have three days to prepare.”
