David is one of approximately 118,000 young people around the country waiting to find out if his application to be covered by the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals Act (DACA) for the next two years is going to be approved.

UI research helps win FDA approval for a breakthrough genetic therapy for a rare form of blindness
On Tuesday, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved a breakthrough genetic therapy for a heredity condition that causes blindness. The treatment, Luxturna, was approved ahead of schedule, thanks, in part, to work done by researchers at the University of Iowa. Prior to the approval of Luxturna, there was no treatment for the rare condition, known as Leber congenital amaurosis (LCA). About 6,000 people have LCA worldwide, including 1,000 to 2,000 people in the United States.
UI Art Museum’s new name celebrates both a recent gift and one of its most important collections
It was announced this week that the University of Iowa Art Museum will be renamed the University of Iowa Stanley Art Museum. The decision follows a donation of $10 million from Dick and Mary Jo Stanley of Muscatine. “The Stanley family has made an indelible mark on our university — and on the art world — and we are proud to name the University of Iowa Stanley Museum of Art in honor of their gift,” UI President Bruce Harreld said in a press release.

A rally on the University of Iowa Pentacrest protesting the federal tax bill passed by the U.S. House of Representatives attracted a crowd of about 60 on Wednesday. The crowd was mostly graduate students, which wasn’t surprising, since the change would drastically increase the amount of taxes grad students pay.

Bidding the iconic University of Iowa Field House pool a fond farewell
An iconic landmark built in 1927 is set to disappear when the swimming pool in the University of Iowa Field House will be updated and converted to a fitness center, according to a budget approved in June by the Iowa Board of Regents Property and Facilities Committee. Projected to run at least $10 million, the update will be funded by gifts and earnings to recreational services and income on university investments.

Regents reveal secret meetings behind Bruce Harreld hire
According to the report by Ryan J. Foley, the business man was recruited in secret — with Regents flouting Iowa’s open meetings and records laws by using private email accounts and holding a series of meetings on July 30, 2015 without a board majority at the business of former Board President Bruce Rastetter — all in an attempt to get Harreld to apply for the job. Harreld applied a day after these meetings.

The University of Iowa celebrated the opening of its newest residence hall, the Elizabeth Catlett Residence Hall, with a ceremony and tours on Friday. The 12-story building along the Iowa River will house about 1,049 students and is the largest dorm on campus.
Recent college grad Gov. Reynolds passes on chance to work on funding problems at Iowa universities
The governor’s office was one of several state agencies that declined to participate in a Tuition Task Force meeting. The Board of Regents cancelled the planned meeting due the lack of participation.
