Community members packed the February 7 opening reception of the “Art from the Inside Out” exhibition at PS1 South, giving me the feel-goods. I saw a woman I used to work with and met her mother; I saw friends and met their grandchild. Artists and their families were there, and it was the most class-diverse art show I’ve attended.

Parole simulation to help employers understand the challenges returning citizens face
Every year around 5,000 Iowans return to their community after incarceration. Two immediate tasks are at hand: finding work and a place to live. A new reentry simulation, the first in Johnson County, aims to help local business owners and employers understand what life is like for these individuals during reentry.

An Iowa City-based prison-to-society reentry program InsideOut is hosting a discussion this Thursday, May 18 by former convict and Texan musician Johnathan Kana: “The Delicate Struggle of the Ex-Offender Identity.”
Public forum on reentry after incarceration at the Coralville Library this week
The forum will include informational displays, guest speakers and breakout discussions around topics like housing, employment, education and training, substance abuse, mental health, personal growth and community integration, probation and parole. The event is free and open to the public.
