As the final minutes of 1999 ticked away, 12 year-old Casey Gerald expected the world to end. So did the other people gathered in the East Texas church, where his grandfather was the pastor. As the year 2000 got closer, a lot of people were expecting an apocalyptic moment, either religious (the Second Coming) or technological (a Y2K meltdown).

The Green Room: Music, community and the Englert Theatre
Jesse Elliot and Rachel Ries, the featured presenters at the next Green Room, understand the intersection of music and community. Elliot has been the director of the Music District in Fort Collins, Colorado, since it opened in 2016. The nonprofit Music District calls itself as a “gathering hub, workspace, and creative playground for the music community. For the novice or pro, it’s a place where anyone can develop the art, learn the business, and share skills and passions with musicians and music lovers.

The Green Room: Kathy Eldon, creative visions and your life’s mission statement
Kathy Eldon’s life has taken her far from her native Cedar Rapids. This week’s featured speaker in the Green Room lecture series at the Englert Theatre has lived in England and Africa (she now resides in California), and is a filmmaker and the author of 17 books, ranging from cookbooks to travel guides to a memoir. Together with her daughter Amy Eldon Turteltaub, Eldon founded Creative Visions Foundation to support “creative activists” using media and art to push for social change.

The Green Room: Dessa, DVIP and the taste of mystery
The third edition of the Green Room opens at 7 p.m. on Monday at the Englert Theatre, with Dessa. The rapper, singer, writer and record executive will be speaking about her life and career. Dessa became internationally famous during the past year with her track “Congratulations” on the Hamilton Mixtape, which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 in December 2016.
