Adoptable Pet of the Week

Nautilus may be a black cat, but she’s anything but a bad omen. This petite, green-eyed girl is a gentle, calming presence at the Iowa City Animal Care and Adoption Center. She likes to sit upright and serenade humans with a beautiful chorus of meows. But when a toy crosses her path, the 1-year-old proves that she still has some kitten in her.

There’s not much to say about this playful pair of kittens that isn’t better understood from observing their quirky, synchronized style of play. Luckily, we have plenty of photos.

Houston, whose name proved appropriate when eight dogs from Houston joined the center’s ranks, is presumed to be about six years old. You’re most likely to find him resting in his cave: a soft enclosed cat bed in his kennel.

Sure, puppies are adorable. But when it comes to loyalty, temperament and overall experience being a dog, you can’t beat a senior.

Dime is one of two guinea pigs at the shelter, and has the most rock-and-roll hairstyle in the whole building. Once you get to know this fuzzy potato, he will love you right back.

Minty is a 2-year-old cat with a lovely tuxedo coloration, including an adorable black spot on her nose. She has a healthy skepticism of the world and would prefer to be the only cat in your life — or at least in your house. However, she is intensely sweet and loves to rub against your legs, hands and face.
