The long-planned replacement of the Gilbert Street Bridge over Ralston Creek will get underway next week. According to the Iowa City Public Works Department, construction will begin on Friday, March 29, weather permitting.

The new bridge will be more pedestrian friendly than the current one, which has been in place since 1972. The project will also stabilize the streambank of Ralston Creek and make improvements to the sewer and storm drain along that part of S Gilbert Street.

“South Gilbert Street is expected to remain open during the first phase of construction work, but with construction in the area, traffic delays are likely,” Public Works said in a news release

The work is expected to be completed by late fall, and the project will advance in stages. As the first phase begins on March 29, E Court Street will be closed where it intersects with Gilbert. Detour signs will be posted when work begins.

“All vehicle and pedestrian detours will be clearly marked with signage,” the department said. “All changes in vehicle parking will also be clearly marked and communicated with residents and businesses in the project area ahead of construction work commencing.”

The construction will also affect bus service in Iowa City. With the bridge still open during the first phase, one on outbound route will change, 5-Lower Muscatine. Stop Stop 7005 will be closed. The inbound Lower Muscatine route will also be affected, as will the inbound routes of 1-South Iowa City and 4-Downtown Shuttle. Stops 7003, 7004 and 7008 will be closed for those inbound routes.

Three temporary bus stops will be added for the duration of the Gilbert Street project
