Wake The Sun, a four member blues-rock band from New York is performing tonight at Gabe’s at 9 PM. Their stop in Iowa City is one of may as they crisscross the country promoting their new self-titled EP.
What makes your sound and music different from other rock bands?
Our music is heavily groove focused. The underlying framework of the song has to be groovy and moving or else the song gets uninteresting and people wont listen.ย Another aspect of our music that sets us apart from other rock music is that each of us focuses on the song as a whole when we write and perform. Our live performance is a fiery ball of energy that grabs you from the very beginning and wonโt let go until the very end. We are a touch southern blues, a touch of vintage rock and a touch of NY grit all rolled into one.
Does your upbringing on Long Island influence your music?
Absolutely. New York breeds a very distinct sound. Itโs a frequency that emanates from the pavement and if you live around it youโre bound to pick it up to some extent. The best way we can describe the sound is gritty, raw, harsh at times, unapologetic, and ballsy.
Howโd you come up with your band name?
The name is an allusion to the vintage washed, 60s long hair donโt care vibes that reverberate through our music. A brainstorming session led to the name Wake The Sun because we feel the imagery of the name reflects the raw, unbridled energy we elucidate at every performance.
