Comedian Janelle James

Last summer, a comedic sketch promising to teach women how to “smile forever” went viral. “Smile Bitch,” the brainchild of Caribbean-born and NYC-based comedian Janelle James satirically envisions a bootcamp that can cure Resting Bitch Face.
Tonight at 9 p.m., James returns to Iowa City and to The Mill for a performance that’s sure to make everyone smile but mostly laugh really hard. James’ brand of comedy is raunchy and is subtly political. “Smile Bitch” takes street harassment and catcalling culture to its logical and absurd extreme. Indeed, the joke originated from a real life experience of someone yelling out to James that “she looked like she had a juicy pussy.”
