L.A. Witch play Gabe’s this Friday, and their music makes a fair case that they may actually be a groups of witches from Los Angeles.
The group’s otherworldly blend of post-punk and psychedelic garage rock feels distinctly supernatural in its ability to mesmerize, while their cool, detached stage presence evokes Hollywood chic as much as it does a sinister horror flick. The group’s badass appeal is perhaps best summed up in the video for its song “Get Lost,” which juxtaposes the threat of nuclear apocalypse with the trio shrugging it all off as they search for thrills and shred out.
L.A. Witch is a favorite of the Los Angeles underground music scene, but so far the group has only released a three-song EP. Though short in length, the eponymous EP is notable for the range of compelling music it exhibits — from the lush, guitar-heavy sound of “You Love Nothing,” to the mellow yet hypnotizing “Heart of Darkness.” With its haunting vocals and use of reverb, the latter track is reminiscent of another superb all-girl L.A. rock act, Warpaint.
Joining L.A. Witch and rounding out a night of rock are Detroit power-punk act Jeremy Porter and the Tucos, and Nashville psychedelic act Paperhead.
