Future Rock w/ Cosby Sweater

Gabe’s – September 20 at 10 p.m. ($10-15)

There are a few guys from Chicago who call themselves Future Rock, they put on incredible live shows and you should probably go see them at Gabe’s tonight.

Their musical style is most often categorized as “electronica,” but the group offers quite a bit more than what you might expect from your average Iowa City electronica show. Future Rock’s Felix Moreno, Mickey Kellerman and Darren Heitz have been performing together for the better part of a decade, developing a sort of stage synergy that’s increasingly uncommon in an age of flash in the pan electronic music projects.

With Darren Heitz sitting on drums, the trio sample and loop themselves throughout the show to create a layered sound that’s both interesting and incredibly difficult to resist, even if you’re just a foot-tapper. Their accompanying light show is just fluff, sure, but what’s electronica without a bit of flash? We’re talking about a group called Future Rock, after all.

Future Rock performed at Gabe’s earlier this year for the 2013 Mission Creek Festival and it was one of the highlights of the week. Gabe’s, it’s worth noting, is probably the most well-suited room in town for facilitating the kind of visual and aural ambiance on which Future Rock thrive, so expect this show to be another great one. Cosby Sweater are set to kick things off at 10 p.m.
