Justice for Danky
Gabe’s — Sunday, Dec. 18 at 6 p.m.

A fundraiser for Cedar Rapids resident Jerime “Danky” Mitchell will be held this Sunday, Dec. 18 at 6 p.m. at Gabe’s in Iowa City. Mitchell was paralyzed last month after being shot by a Cedar Rapids police officer during a traffic stop.
This benefit concert follows not long after last week’s announcement by Linn County Attorney Jerry Vander Sanden that the grand jury in the case has decided not to indict the officer involved, Lucas Jones.
Last Thursday, Dec. 8, the dash cam video of the incident was released to the public.
The event is to raise money to help Mitchell and his family with the cost of medical bills and rehabilitation. A $5-10 suggested donation will be collected at the door.
Organizer Brandon Miller, who hosts regular events at Gabe’s, was drawn to the Iowa City venue in an attempt “to help raise and spread awareness to other areas” besides Cedar Rapids, he said in an email. “It’s surprising to know that most students I talk to have no idea that this is going on,” Miller said.
The fundraiser will be hosted by James the Barber, with special guest DJ Tone da Boss. Performers include Semi Sixteenz, Mike Page, Big Bang, Vo Marley, Jose G, Lou Kane, Jared Kudde$ and Bill Thousand, as well as A-Wet$ Jack Sueno, who are students at the University of Iowa.
“Danky has been a long time supporter of my events so I’m doing what I can do show my appreciation,” Miller said. “I also think there is a great injustice being done to cover up what happened, so I want to spread the message for people to research this incident themselves to see how things are not adding up.”
