Liberal Arts Faculty Lecture with Rachelle Biderman: “Artificial Empathy: How AI Companions Are Changing Human Connection”

Come to the first Kirkwood Community College Liberal Arts Faculty Lecture of the spring semester on Thursday, Feb. 5, featuring Rachelle Biderman, Assistant Professor of Communication Studies! Biderman will present: “Artificial Empathy: How AI Companions Are Changing Human Connection.”
As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly conversational, many people are turning to AI companions to meet interpersonal communication needs once fulfilled by human relationships. This lecture explores emerging research on why individuals use AI for emotional support, companionship, and connection; how AI systems are evolving in their ability to produce empathetic responses; and what this growing communication trend may mean for the future of human interaction.
Rachelle Biderman is a communication educator with a passion for helping people become more confident, effective, and authentic speakers. She teaches Fundamentals of Oral Communication and related courses, where she focuses on practical speaking skills, audience connection, and real-world application. She enjoys making communication concepts accessible, engaging, and relevant to everyday life.
Join us at 11:15 a.m. in 2082 Cedar Hall on Kirkwood Community College’s main campus in Cedar Rapids. This event is free and open to the public.
