Old Gray w/ Scowler, Ice Hockey, Afterthoughts
Public Space One — Saturday, July 26 at 8 p.m. ($5)
Public Space One is getting hardcore this Saturday with New Hampshire-based screamo act Old Gray and Milwaukee’s Scowler. Ice Hockey and Afterthoughts, both based in Iowa, will fill the bill.
Screamo is a genre that can be (and has been) subject to self-parody, but Old Gray manages to hold onto a sense of subtlety within their work. Their latest full-length, 2013’s An Autobiography, is certainly representative of the screamo scene’s latest DIY resurgence. The record is lean and to-the-point, clocking in at just 26 minutes, while still taking the time to cover vast stylistic ground.
Since forming in 2011, the 4-piece has mastered the ability to shift from a fast and intense, classic hardcore sound to doom-metal, ambient and even spoken-word territory.
Scowler holds down the math-rock side of post-hardcore, although they’re self-described as “non-denominational” hardcore. The four-piece has been playing together since 2012, developing a devoted following as a result of their chaotic live show. The group has only released one five-song EP and a three-song split 7-inch, but fans of the twitchier sections of At The Drive-In’s discography are certainly going to be pleased by Scowler.
