Natural Grocers seeks Iowa City expansion

A natural food store hopes join the Iowa City community. Mark McPherson and David Meyer of the development firm Equity Ventures have submitted a letter to the City of Iowa City Planning and Zoning Commission for the redevelopment of a portion of Waterfront Drive. The redevelopment plan — to be voted upon at the June 6 Iowa City Council Meeting — would include the establishment of the Colorado-based health food store Natural Grocers at the southeast corner of Highway 6 and Gilbert Street.

Car-X, Los Portales and Carlos O’Kelly’s currently reside at this corner of Waterfront Drive. The redevelopment plan would include a comprehensive retail center featuring a 15,000 square foot Natural Grocers by Vitamin Cottage and a new 5,500 square foot Carlos O’Kelly’s cafe.

Car-X will remain at its current location.

“Car-X Tire and Auto has been operating in Iowa City for over 16 years and we are excited about the opportunity to be adjacent to a quality development with a great national/regional and restaurant,” said Mukunda Kantamnemi (Partner, AutoTech Iowa) in a letter of support included with the plan.

The future of Los Portales however remains unclear, as the owners could not be reached at this time.
