Iowa City Weekender – Sept 3-6

WKNDR-LupeTHURSDAY

Lupe Fiasco | Hubbard Park (Jefferson and Madison, across from the IMU) | 8 pm | FREE

SCOPE Productions, the University of Iowa’s Student Commission on Programming and Entertainment, brings us Lupe Fiasco, Grammy-winning hip-hop artist from Chicago.

Be sure to make it by 6 for free food and fellowship at the pep rally, because with free shows like these, it really is pretty great to be a Hawkeye!

Also THURSDAY

Minneapolis indy band Hockey Night is no more, but now we have Free Energy!  Their new album (produced with James Murphy, of LCD Soundsystem) is now out on DFA Records, and they will be tearing down the Mill tonight, so go check em out!

FRIDAY

Soul Spin | The Soul Hole, upstairs at the Industry | 9 pm | FREE or $2 if under 21

What you gone bring to the Soul Hole? Well, DJ’s Mr. Kicks and The Count gone bring rare soul, deep funk, real deal r-n-b, and soul-jazz original vinyl sides straight to you. After you do what you do, go do it again at the Soul Hole, upstairs at The Industry, 211 Iowa Ave.

SATURDAY

Taco Time | The Deadwood | Noonish | Free (with purchase, please)

It’s officially football season, and that means football games and traditional football grub at the Deadwood; sometimes chili, this week… tacos!

Whether this time of year makes you want to do keg stands till you can’t stand, or hide in a shower fearing for your life, you will find good company at the Deadwood Tavern (6 S Dubuque St).

SUNDAY

The Graduate | The Englert Theater | 7 pm | $5

Support The Englert’s inclination to show movies on off-nights.  If enough people come to these things… think how great it would be to have a movie theater downtown again!

MONDAY

If this 3-day weekend you’d like to take the opportunity to visit lovely Fairfield…

Beach Boys, Endless Summer Tour | Fairfield Middle School Outdoor Field | 2 pm | $12 – $37.50

The Labor Day date will be the last on The Beach Boy’s Endless Summer Tour, so not only is this a chance to see the classic all-American band close to home, but also the last chance to see them anywhere in the country anytime soon.  Also, this is a benefit for the David Lynch Foundation, which means there is every possibility that this will turn into the weirdest afternoon EVER.  Think about it

Happy Labor Day, people!
