Iowa City Weekender: August 13-16

Posted by Weekender | Aug 13, 2009 | Arts & Entertainment, The Weekender

Greetings Weekenders!

We’ve had our share of national and international bands this summer, so we’re dedicating this week’s Weekender to the local scene–one newcomer, one local favorite that’s leaving town, and then some long time stalwarts of the eastern Iowa sound that ain’t goin’ nowhere… we hope!

Thursday, August 13

Collectible Boys w/ Exposed Fiction | Yacht Club | 9 pm | $5

Big thanks to Collectible Boys for being our special guest on this week’s edition of Little Village Radio.  Three of the four collectibles treated us to a very impressive, live, in-studio acoustic set.  Thanks Renee, Bill and Justin, and good luck with this new project!  We look forward to seeing the full band tonight at the Yacht Club.  If you missed it, check back soon for the podcast, at

Banjo Kellie’s Record Release and Going-Away Party | The Picador | 9 pm | FREE

We are very sad to see Banjo Kellie is leaving town.  If you have been lucky enough to catch her performances, then you know she is an incredible songwriter with a sound that is both timeless and unique.  Head to the Picador this Friday, listen to the show for free, and pick up a CD to remember her by.  Stop by her myspace for a preview.

Patrick Bloom w/ The Mayflies | The Mill | 9 pm | $6

It’s another record release party, woo hoo!  Patrick Bloom has a new record for us to celebrate, so come get a live preview, then pick up your very own copy.  He’s opening up for The Mayflies, one of Iowa City’s best psycho-blues-grass-rock bands.  Jim Musser (No Depression) describes guitarist/vocalist Stacy Webster as “the most expressive pure roots singer to come down the pike in many a moon.”  If you think you’ve been around for your share of Iowa City moons, come see if you agree!

Sunday, August 15

Student Art Show | Iowa City Senior Center, 28 S Linn | 12-5 pm | FREE

Not all Iowa City Art Students are enrolled at the U of I — Some are enrolled at the Senior Center!  These artists have an exhibition that is open now and will run for a couple more weeks, so go show your support!
